DIY Tail Light Lens Restoration Tips

If you are determined to try restoring your tail light on your own, use the following tips. They will help you avoid damaging the piece.

  1. Clean the lights.
Use specialized auto soap, water, and a soft cloth to remove dirt and dust carefully. Be very thorough to make sure that there are no particles of debris left inside the scratches.
  2. Apply painter’s tape to the surface around the light.
This will prevent you from damaging the paint when you start sanding and polishing the light itself.
  3. Soak a piece of fine (1500-grit) sandpaper in a bucket of soapy water.
Leave sandpaper for about 20 minutes for it to get properly soaked. This way, you will minimize the risk of scratching the surface of the lights.
  4. Lubricate the surface of the light.
Take some of the water+auto soap solution and pour it into a spray bottle. You will need to reapply the lubricant several times during the procedure as it’s essential for both the sandpaper and surface of the lights to remain wet.
  5. Start sanding.
Take the nicely soaked sandpaper in your hand and start sanding the surface. Move it from side to side for about 20 seconds before wetting it again. Make sure to apply even pressure and keep your movements controlled. Move only vertically or horizontally to avoid adding a few ugly scratches instead of removing the existing ones.
  6. Clean the lights.
Once the surface is sanded down properly, you will need to clean it thoroughly. Use the soapy solution again and remove all the tiny particles of shed plastic.
The result you get will not be perfect, but it should be rather good. If you want your tail lights to look like new, you should employ a professional restoration service.
  7. Polish the surface.
Apply liquid auto paint polish, wax, or any other kind of specialized solution to seal and polish the sanded surface. Take a generous amount of it and spread it evenly over the light. Leave for a few moments before removing the excess with a piece of soft cloth.
  8. Remove the tape.
Don’t forget to clean off the residue adhesive material from the tape before it starts gathering dust.

Please note that this method of  tail light restoration will only deal with the surface of the light. However, its back also needs proper maintenance. In order to take care of the chromed surfaces at the back, the lights will need to be removed. In many cases, the chrome finish will need to be restored as well. This task is rather complicated and requires the use of specialized tools. Therefore, it will be best to entrust it to professionals.
