Windshield Tint in Chicago: Affordable Prices, Best Films, Fast Work

Windshield tint is a modern and affordable solution to protect yourself and your car against the dangerous UV rays of the sun. In this article you will learn about the benefits of tinting, the percentage you are allowed to tint, the costs of the application and for how long you are protected by a windscreen tinting film.

The sun can do a lot of damage to a car, both to the exterior, the interior and the people inside. The UV rays are not only causing the interior to heat up, they can damage the paint and the upholstery, and can also be dangerous for the driver and the passengers.

What is windshield tint?

Windshield tinting process refers to the application of a thin film over a window in order to reduce sunlight. This can be done for vehicles (windshield, front windows or back windows) but also for the windows of homes and offices. The main benefits of window tinting are:

  • Reduced heat
  • Reduced exposure to UV rays
  • Reduced glare
  • More privacy
  • Improved aesthetics

Besides these benefits, windshield tint can reduce the risk of accidents, as many of them happen at sunrise or sunset when the sun rays are getting in the eyes of the drivers. The windscreen is not allowed to be darkened in most states and countries, and people usually do this on the side and back windows. But for those that do not like dark windows, there are also options to get the needed protection without darkening the glass.

Cons of windshield tint

While there are many benefits of doing this, there are also some disadvantages:

  • The risk of getting a ticket if your tint is darker than the state limit
  • Visibility issues if the tint is too dark and the weather conditions are bad
  • A darker interior during the daytime

Window tint darkness

The VLT (Visible Light Transmission) measures the amount of light which passes through the window (it can be any type of window, whether of a car or a building). So a 90% VLT will allow 90% of the light to pass through. The lower the percentage, the darker the film. For example, the darkest that you can get is 5% which is legally allowed only on limousines and other special vehicles.

Is it legal to tint your windshield?

There are no federal windshield tint regulations — each state has its own rules. The general rule is: the windshield can only be tinted with a low VLT on the upper side (stripe). In the state of Illinois, the front 2 windows can be tinted to 35% if the windows behind the driver are not darker than 35%, or 50% if the windows behind the drivers are darker than 35%. The windshield is only allowed to be tinted with a 6 inch 5% stripe and the rear window can have any darkness of tint.

Which windshield protection film is the best?

When it comes to windshield tint, the top 2 manufacturers are 3M and Rayno. Tinting Chicago has been using films produced by these brands for more than 8 years. We chose them after trying out dozens of other products — and are more than satisfied with the quality (go to our customer reviews section for real clients’ experiences). Window tinting films produced by 3M and Rayno come with a lifetime warranty against peeling, bubbling or fading.

Types of windshield tint films

Based on the materials they are made of there are 4 categories out there at the market: dyed, metalized, carbon fiber tint films and ceramic films. But here at Tinting Chicago we only work with the two latter as to our experience, only they provide high quality.

How much does windshield tint cost?

The prices in our shops differ based on the type of the vehicle (size and brand), the type of film used and also on the windows that are tinted. For the windshield the prices can range between $149 and $339. Luxe, rare vehicles are more difficult to tint compared to others, so there might be an extra fee of $50-100 or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does windshield tinting last?

For about 5 years or more. The tints we use in our shops are manufactured by top brands 3M and Rayno. They come with a lifetime warranty for peeling, bubbling or fading. This doesn’t cover the normal wear & tear and scratches. But if you take good care of your windshield, you will definitely benefit from the protection film for years to come.

Can I tint my whole windshield?

No. The tinting laws are different from one state to another, so it depends on where you live. For residents of Chicago and the state of Illinois, non-reflective tinting is allowed only on the top 6 inches of the windshield. But even though you can’t tint your entire windscreen, you can still benefit from the protection it gives.

What percent is factory tint?

As you may already know, most new cars do not come with any tint at all. But the cars that do come with an existing protection film, have a factory tint of around 80% (which is not that much). We can offer you shades ranging from 5% to 90% and it is up to you to decide if you keep it within the legal limits or not. Our company is not liable for any tickets if you choose to go lower than the legal tint percentage.
